An excursion through the different types of mangrove
The heart of the mangrove
From Sainte-Rose harbour, the excursion takes you to Rivière Moustique for a total immersion in the mangrove. Different trees grow in this brackish water, a mixture of salt and fresh water, necessary to Guadeloupe’s natural environment.
Several birds can be met: white egrets are the most familiar, pelicans the most impressive. Many crabs live in the mangrove, especially the red crabs : Local people have their ways for cooking them, especially at Easter-time.
The journey continues further in the sea, from one little island to another, sailing on intense turquoise waters whose depth ranges from 4 feet to a few inches. This part of the journey will make you feel like reaching a new world, away from civilisation!
Îlet La Biche
Reaching the end of the first half of your journey, a stop at îlet La Biche is a must. This white sand island is still well-preserved. You will be offered some refreshments, your feet in the water. The most curious participants will have the opportunity to see our tropical colourful fish, corals, lots of starfish and hothurias (sea cucumbers). The others will enjoy relaxing in the crystal-clear water.
The lagoon on your way back
Your return trip will lead you on the lagoon between islands, sand bars, mangrove shrubs, with a view on the magnificent volcanic chain of Basse Terre. For those who will choose the afternoon excusion, the return trip will allow you to admire the setting of the sun where blue sky and sea turn orange and purple.
